On Wednesday, April 26, 2023, four leaders in preservation spoke at a panel at the Jewish Museum-FIU for the 16th World Congress on Art Deco lecture series.
The panelists were:
- Atul Kumar, President, Art Deco Mumbai Trust
- Fabio Grementieri, Architect. University of Buenos Aires. Specialized in Historic Preservation and Architectural History
- Therese Poletti, Preservation Director of the Art Deco Society of California, and
- Kathleen Murphy Skolnik, who teaches art and architectural history at Roosevelt University in Chicago, Illinois
The panelists discussed preservation and restoration as it applies to their cities. For example, Poletti weighed in on her experience with developers, based on her work preserving some of the Bay Area’s iconic Art Deco theaters.
Grementieri spoke about the involvement of restoration architects in renewing the public works of Francisco Salamone, which was a collaborative process alongside the municipal government of Buenos Aires.
And Murphy Skolnik talked about adaptive reuse in the preservation of a post office in Chicago, as well as the conversion of local hotels and residential buildings.
The 16th World Congress on Art Deco was made possible with the support of the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, the City of Miami Beach, Miami-Dade County, the State of Florida, the International Coalition of Art Deco Societies, and the Art Deco Society of the Palm Beaches.
