Collins Canal Historic Designation Approved

In a triumph for historic preservation, Miami Beach’s oldest surviving man-made structure, the Collins Canal, has been approved for historic designation by the Mayor and Commission of the City of Miami Beach. The unanimous vote came at the July 24th Commission Meeting – after more than two years of effort.

The canal has a fascinating history: It is associated with Miami Beach’s initial developmental period as agricultural farmland. The construction of Collins Canal was part of John S. Collins (1837-1928) agricultural project that began over a century ago, and it has stood the test of time! The original alignment of the Collins Canal has been maintained since its construction in 1912.

“We are thrilled that after a two-year effort, the Collins Canal has now been designated as historic by the City of Miami Beach.”

Daniel Ciraldo, Executive Director of the Miami Design Preservation League

We are grateful to the many stakeholders who supported the historic designation of the canal, including the Collins Park Association, the Miami Beach Botanical Garden, the Bayshore HOA, the Sunset Harbor Association, Clean Miami Beach, and Urban Paradise Guild.
