Asere Social Club

Wolfsonian-FIU

Fri, February 28th @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm EST

Date: Friday, February 28, 2025 Time: 7–8:30pm Location: The Wolfsonian–FIU @ 1001 Washington Avenue

Asere is a word with West African origins that many Cubans use to address a friend—it has been called the “most representative word in Cuban Spanish.” Experience the spirit of asere in this evening featuring the folk/country band Cortadito, rumba group Irawo Osa, poets Román Díaz and Adrian Castro, and expert insights from Wolfsonian research fellow Ivor Miller. Together, they will explore the African roots of Cuban popular music and its global influence, bearing witness to the fusion of ancient traditions and modern rhythms.

Presented with Community Arts and Culture as part of the 27th annual Afro Roots Fest, with support from the City of Miami Beach, the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, and the Library of America.
