Renowned as one of the world’s best beaches and vacation hotspots, Miami Beach is known for its top-flight entertainment. The city’s Filmore Theatre, New World Concert Hall, and premier hotels have hosted the world’s top performers. This year, in honor of Women’s History Month, the Miami Beach Commission for Women, in conjunction with the Miami Design Preservation League, will honor 10 groundbreaking women performers with an exhibit in Lummus Park. This vibrant homage is to 10 women who are each luminaries in their own right and shaped the landscape of their genre. These women have defied conventions, shattered barriers, and left an indelible mark on the music industry. Each of them has performed at least once on Miami Beach.
This exhibit will honor the following ten women:
1. Josephine Baker – Cabaret singer and social activist.
2. Gloria Estefan – Founder of the Miami Sound Machine.
3. Aretha Franklin – “The Queen of Soul.”
4. Judy Garland – Hollywood legend and star of the Wizard of Oz.
5. Whitney Houston – “The Voice.”
6. Madonna – “The Material Girl.”
7. Chita Rivera – West Side Story Star
8. Diana Ross – The lead singer of the Supremes and a trailblazing artist.
9. Barbara Streisand – Lifetime of Music, Theatre and Film Performances
10. Tina Turner – “Queen of Rock and Roll.”
Enjoy the sights and sounds of South Beach as you stroll down Ocean Walk and learn about our city’s musical past and the women who helped make Miami Beach a world-famous destination. Step into the music of legends who have performed on Miami Beach and join us to celebrate Women’s History Month! Take your photos with these iconic images and post them to your social media pages.
