Throughout his career\, Newman photographed many Jewish public figures who have made a significant impact in their respective fields including artists\, entertainers\, scientists\, philosophers and politicians. \n \n\nArnold Newman was one of the world’s most prolific\, innovative and distinguished portrait photographers. He is considered the “Father of environment portraiture\,” a style that places its subjects in a carefully composed setting that captures the essence of their work and personality. Each portrait is captioned with personal anecdotes by Newman on the sitting and its famous subject. Using the camera as his tool\, Newman viewed his subjects through heart and mind\, the result being a very personal and intimate look.   \nNewman photographed for many publications\, including Life\, Harper’s Bazaar\, Look\, The New Yorker and Holiday. Early in his career\, Newman chose photography as the medium for finding his own direction and self-expression. His images for the Farm Security Administration (FSA) shared the same qualities of immediacy and humanistic sympathy as the photographs of Dorothy Lange and Walker Evans. Newman was given his first solo exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1945\, published over 14 books\, taught and continued to work until he passed away in 2006. \nPortraits in the exhibition: \nYaacov Agam\, Shmuel Agnon\, Woody Allen\, Ehud Barak\, Saul Bellow\, David Ben-Gurion\, Leonard Bernstein\, Abe Burrows\, Marc Chagall\, Gen Moshe Dayan\, Abba Eban\, Otto Frank\, Felix Frankfurter\, John Garfield\, Chaim Gross\, David Halberstam\, Isser Harel\, Al Hirschfeld\, Menashe Kadishman\, Louis Kahn\, Danny Kaye\, Mayor Teddy Kollek\, Ibram Lassow\, Sen. Curated by Kenneth Helphand\, the exhibition presents 73 mezuzahs collected by the Winiks that represent a wide range of styles\, materials\, and Jewish symbols. The mezuzahs were created in places all over the world\, including Israel\, the United States\, Denmark\, England\, Ethiopia\, Germany\, the Netherlands\, India\, Iran\, Italy\, Morocco\, Poland\, and Yemen and date from the late 18th to the 21st century. \nA mezuzah (from the Hebrew word for doorpost) is a handwritten scroll containing a prayer which is placed inside a decorative case and affixed to a doorpost in the home. Among the oldest of Jewish traditions\, mezuzahs are often associated with the concept of protection\, and serve as a constant reminder of God and a symbol of one’s Jewish identity. This tradition and the title of the exhibition come from a mandate in the Torah to “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. Take to heart these instructions…and inscribe them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.” The exhibition is sponsored at JMOF-FIU by John & Jo Sumberg. Featuring site-specific installations by Beatriz Chachamovits\, Mira Lehr\, and Lauren Shapiro\, the exhibition brings together works by local Miami artists that reflect on climate change and human impact on our oceans\, coral reefs\, and rapidly shifting environment.  \nWorking across installation and performance\, Chachamovits’ draws attention to the effects of ocean acidification in her ephemeral installations of unfired clay sculptures submerged in water. Along with extreme temperature fluctuations\, ocean acidification can cause coral reefs to dissolve and disintegrate\, significantly impacting reefs across Florida. The resulting works\, when activated\, expose the public to different stages of ocean acidification and its effects on coral.  \nShapiro’s practice too experiments with art’s possibility to affect change and cultivate a broad awareness of our environment. Working alongside ecologists to understand and narrate nature\, Shapiro merges craft\, science and technology to document disappearing ecosystems as sculptural ceramic archives. \nWhereas Chachamovits and Shapiro consider environmental threats to marine ecosystems\, Lehr’s immersive installations pay homage to mangrove trees\, which protect coastlines against hurricanes and serve as nurseries for aquatic life. Threatened by rising sea levels\, urban development\, and human activities\, mangroves in Florida\, while protected by law\, continue to fall victim to deforestation. \nUtilizing different media to convey the elegance of our aquatic ecosystems and cultivate a broad awareness of their delicacy\, the participating artists draw attention to the environmental challenges we face in Florida and the actions we can take to reverse them. Fragile Beauty is a celebration of nature\, yet at the same time a call for awareness and action to preserve it for generations to come. The couple was inspired by events in 1940\, during World War II\, in which thousands of Jewish people were trapped in Kaunas\, Lithuania between the advancing German troops and the Russian army taking over the Baltic states. On July 24th\, 1940 the Dutch Consul-General in Kaunas\, Jan Zwartendijk\, took personal action and\, even though he did not know the Jewish refugees\, began to issue visas. In only two weeks\, he issued 2\,345 visas and saved the lives of more than 6\,000 people. The Japanese counsel of Kaunas\, Sugihara\, likewise issued visas that enabled the people to travel through Russia and reach Japan by boat. \nThis exhibition is generously supported by Consulate General of the Netherlands in New York | DutchCulture USA and The Netherland-America Foundation. Through the use of new materials and technology\, he was able to realize his ideas in a post-war II booming Florida. Giller’s body of work includes designs for President Kennedy’s Alliance for Progress in Latin America\, revolutionized motel design\, created more than 3\,000 housing units for United States military bases as well as a bevy of modern residential\, commercial and institutional projects. Two of his projects\, The Carillon Hotel and The Diplomat Hotel are iconic symbols of the glitz and glamour that transformed Miami into an urban playground. \nGiller’s work demands attention and recognition and there is no one better than his son\, architect Ira Giller\, to guide us through this retrospective of Giller’s work. With Ira’s invaluable insight\, the projects shown here are more than just brick and mortar\, they are windows into a man’s creativity. Ira’s own style builds upon Norman’s legacy with his creative ingenuity as well as adding much to the narrative with his renowned work as well. Features of what came to be known as the “tropical home\,” such as Florida Rooms and screened patios\, were outcomes of a fantastic range of local architectural experiments that persisted even after innovations like air conditioning redefined the relationship between indoor and outdoor climates. Cool off at the Jewish Museum of Florida (JMOF) as architect and historian Allan Shulman surveys the vital forces\, from technology to romantic ideas about the tropics\, that shaped the region’s architecture. \nPresented in conjunction with JMOF’s exhibition Giller & Giller: An Adventure in Architecture as part of The Wolfsonian’s Mark Mamolen program series on American homes\, investigating how the design of living space powerfully expresses individual personality and social values.
