Mirrors of our loftiest dreams and deepest fears\, maps draw literal lines between “you” and “me\,” “us” and “other\,” more often reflecting how we see it than how it is. Plotting Power: Maps and the Modern Age follows the use of map-like imagery for political\, commercial\, and other purposes in the first half of the 20th century\, when the possibilities of travel and technology opened new horizons for global ambition. Featuring Wolfsonian collection items including paintings\, prints\, posters\, industrial design\, and graphic materials\, the exhibition traces how maps and other representations of geography were shaped by design strategies\, diverse agendas\, and signature stories of modern history. \nPlotting Power is made possible by the Arthur F. & Alice E. Adams Charitable Foundation and the Cowles Charitable Trust. Together\, they created large-scale\, ephemeral\, public art projects\, involving dramatic interventions in carefully selected outdoor locations. With a career that spans nearly six decades\, their work has helped to expand the definition of art beyond paintings and sculptures\, envisioning instead a radically democratic art form capable of speaking directly to broad audiences across a full spectrum of society in public space. \nThis exhibition presents stellar works gifted to PAMM by Christo’s longtime friends Maria Bechily and Scott Hodes. These are fine examples of Christo’s drawing practice\, which constitutes a pivotal aspect of his production. Christo and Jeanne-Claude declined all financial support from governments\, institutions\, single patrons\, and foundations\, choosing to fund their massive projects through the direct sales of drawings such as these. These works memorialize the projects and represent an alternative to the traditional funding structures for art. Collectively\, the drawings exemplify an expansive overview of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s oeuvre\, comprising their major projects spanning from the late 1960s to the early 2000s. Featuring works from The Bass Collection and works on loan\, Phraseology is on view from July 30\, 2022\, through April 23\, 2023. \nThe term “phraseology” references the specific choice of words that a communicator\, in this case the artist\, uses to highlight certain topics. With the rise of the Conceptual Art movement in the 1960s\, many artists began to create art that valued an idea or concept over the finished work. Artists wanted to redefine what art could be and the topics it addressed beyond visual aesthetics. In Phraseology artists merge form and idea by creating works that contain text\, familiar phrases and poetry. \nArtists in Phraseology employ recognizable language\, phrases or slogans that provide conflicting modes of observation to relay a new or different perspective. Placing text in the central role in their art practice\, the artists use word play\, political activism\, subversion of advertising or appropriation of form to reveal\, amplify and question histories and contemporary issues. Seating will be available on a first-come\, first-served basis. \n\n\nAbout JJ Wood\, AIA \nJJ Wood\, AIA is Founder + Principal of Urban Robot Associates. JJ is interested in urban solutions that create places\, and places that tell stories. While attending Harvard\, JJ specialized in researching urban economics and industrial districts\, contributing original conjecture in the field of redevelopment through urbanized agriculture. JJ has managed an array of projects\, from small and large mixed-use architectural projects\, across multifamily housing\, to commercial “eatertainment” venues. Interested in the implementation of computer technologies and design\, he has helped implement BIM production methods firm-wide. At Urban Robot\, JJ has continued to develop a design ethos based on practical\, rational\, and elegant minimalist intervention\, while simultaneously spearheading the technical advancement of highly complex\, multi-million dollar projects involving extensive public infrastructure. \nAbout Urban Robot \n“Urban Robot Associates (UR) is a design collective located in Miami Beach\, specializing in landscape architecture\, architecture\, urban design and interior design. \nAs an interdisciplinary firm\, UR inherently approaches design with an understanding of the lasting value that comes from listening to everyone’s voice. The process of uncovering the inner truths of a project — each site’s unique history\, each community’s unique personality\, and each client’s unique goals — is core to our design approach\, and has allowed UR to create spaces that are meaningful\, functional\, and memorable. Whether a streetscape\, tower\, restaurant or park\, UR strives to improve urban life. \nUR’s rare composition as a multi-disciplinary firm ensures that we design places that address all scales — from urban planning considerations to specific plant selections — as well as all programmatic needs — from architectural to ecologic. This cross-pollination between fields leads to expanded creativity and problem-solving\, and allows for an elevated understanding of the full spectrum of design challenges and solutions. It has culminated in multiple awards\, including an Historic Preservation Award for the restoration of an historic MiMo building in South Beach\, and multiple awards from the American Institute of Architects. \nDiversity is embedded in the leadership of our team: Founded by female designer\, Justine Velez\, UR’s leadership group is rounded out by JJ Wood\, Sebastian Velez and Giancarlo Pietri — of Cuban\, Colombian and Puerto Rican heritage\, respectively. The firm draws upon on its team’s diverse backgrounds to bring about singular narratives that are true to concept and tailored to each project. We understand that we are designing spaces for people to live\, play\, eat and work\, and that design decisions can determine whether a neighborhood or a venue thrives. \nOur core team for this project has cemented a dynamic and synergistic working relationship over many years working together. Principal Justine Velez\, Project Manager Wally Lucky\, and Project Designer Daniela Romero have worked hand-in-hand on over three dozen projects. The recent addition of Brook Dannemiller\, RLA\, adds even more depth to our collective experience\, as well as specific expertise in horticulture\, arboriculture and construction details. Architectural expertise will come from principals Sebastian Velez (Design Lead) and JJ Wood (Construction Lead)\, who collectively bring decades of experience with both historic and contemporary buildings. Pre-qualified by the City of Miami Beach for Historic District Resiliency and Adaptation\, Sebastian and JJ are known experts on the effects of sea level rise on our urban fabric\, and are poised to provide solutions. \nUR is passionate about improving the urban condition in general — but especially in Miami Beach\, our home. Fifteen years of living\, working\, and building in Miami Beach have engendered a strong understanding of “genius loci” and a deep familiarity with the City’s history and peoples. Extensive experience throughout South Florida has ensured we are unusually well-versed in local code\, building practices\, approvals\, and resiliency\, and our location on Lincoln Road Mall — a stone’s throw from Ocean Drive — ensures that we have our finger on the pulse of the City. The couple was inspired by events in 1940\, during World War II\, in which thousands of Jewish people were trapped in Kaunas\, Lithuania between the advancing German troops and the Russian army taking over the Baltic states. On July 24th\, 1940 the Dutch Consul-General in Kaunas\, Jan Zwartendijk\, took personal action and\, even though he did not know the Jewish refugees\, began to issue visas. It felt like all the jazz and music-heads were talking about an iconoclastic musical genius living right in our midst in North Beach. And suddenly\, he was popping up everywhere – featured in sets by innovative jazz and international artists\, at festivals\, bringing his unique style to our stage. Now we feature a full evening with Mr. Hossn\, who promises a journey through his sensory and intellectual musical landscape\, as he takes over the November edition of the monthly North Beach Social – starting with some unreleased songs played solo\, leading into some AfroBrazilian Jazz by his trio\, and closing with his ’supergroup’ Elas. \nMr. Hossn was born in a humble home in Salvador\, Bahia\, from a family whose heritage included African\, European\, Middle Eastern and indigenous ancestry. He began working as a musician at just age 10\, leaving behind formal schooling to instead soak up knowledge from experienced players. By the time he was 15\, he was accompanying acclaimed Brazilian names like Hermeto Pascoal\, Roberto Mendes\, Daniela Mercury\, Gilberto Gil\, and Lenine. He next moved into the international arena\, and has collaborated with artists including Joe Zawinul Syndicate\, Didier Lockwood\, Jorge Drexler\, Concha Buika\, Quincy Jones\, Alfredo Rodriguez\, Richard Bona\, and many more. \nHis group ELAS is dedicated to women\, and features four stellar female artists: Clarissa Vieira (Cello)\, Yissy Garcia (Drums)\, Magela Herrera (Flute/Keyboards)\, and Totti Lamadrid (Piano) \n6:30pm Doors / 8pm Show \nFood & beverage are available for purchase at the show. As radio proliferated through the first half of the twentieth century\, Miami Beach also transformed from an untamed barrier island into a famous tourism and cultural destination. \nRadio quickly became the “rage” in the mid-1920s as more and more Americans realized that owning a radio meant news\, entertainment\, weather\, and politics could be transmitted wirelessly to them from the comfort of their homes. The radio brought families together to listen to broadcasts in their living rooms\, connecting people to faraway places and signaling the start of the machine age. \nMiami Beach’s own pioneers recognized that promotion was vital to its success. They broke the mold by adding radio stations to their hotels\, broadcasting a message from this city carved from a jungle. \nRadio styles were dynamic\, often reflecting American culture and industrial design. Movies\, architecture\, automobiles\, and the 1939 World’s Fair were a few such examples. The materials from which radio chassis were made such as wood\, resins\, plastics\, metals\, and mirrored glass\, provided an endless array of aesthetically pleasing choices – many which are highlighted in this exhibit. \nRadio Waves explores the Golden Age of Radio beginning in the 1920s to the late 1950s\, as manifested by the distinctive architecture of Miami Beach. Art Deco\, Streamline\, and Mid-Century Modern hotels and apartments houses designed by some of America’s foremost architects continue to welcome guests to the sun\, sand\, and sea of the City of Miami Beach. \nMiami-Dade Residents: Free Admission; General Ticket: $7 URL:https://mdpl.org/event/radio-waves-miami-beach-and-the-golden-age-of-radio/2022-11-30/ LOCATION:Art Deco Museum\, 1001 Ocean Drive\, Miami Beach\, FL\, 33139\, United States CATEGORIES:Museum Exhibition ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://mdpl.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/radio-waves-exhibit-1.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20221130T180000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20221130T190000 DTSTAMP:20240328T154052 CREATED:20221007T145917Z LAST-MODIFIED:20221007T145917Z UID:10004044-1669831200-1669834800@mdpl.org SUMMARY:Carlo Mollino: Architect and Storyteller DESCRIPTION:Carlo Mollino was a remarkable protagonist of 20th-century Italian culture. The first is This Here Place: Africa and the Global Diaspora\, which is inspired by a quote from Toni Morrison’s novel “Beloved\,” where Morrison describes the nightmare of slavery and calls for a reimagining of the past and an embrace of a future reality infused with love. The exhibition\, which brings together six international artists from OLCDC’s collection\, including African Masters Abdoulaye Konaté from Mali\, Senegalese Viyé Diba\, and Barthélémy Toguo from Cameroon\, is curated by South African Tumelo Mosaka. \nThe second exhibition titled A Beautiful Human Love\, is built on the letter to humankind titled\, “La Belle Amour Humaine\,” which was written by Haiti’s Jacques Stephen Alexis in 1957 and which inspired Lyonel Trouillot’s novel by the same name. A Beautiful Human Love presents slices of Haitian Art History through the wo/men\, stylistics\, and movements that have shaped the aesthetics of this great nation of the Caribbean. The exhibition participates in Alexis’ 100th birthday celebrations and is curated by Haitian American\, Jean Jacques Alexis\, the son of the author. \nThe third exhibition is curated and presented by Alfonso D’Niscio Brooks and the talented team at AFRIKIN® and is titled: The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born\, a play on the title of Ayi Kwei Armah’s novel.  It features an array of international\, emerging\, and mid-career artists of acclaim from the world stage. The artists assembled in this exhibition have defied their otherness to enter mainstream art history. They question\, “In whose eyes am I not beautiful?”\, with the words of Ayi Kwei Armah coming to mind\, “Alone\, I am nothing. I have nothing. We have power\, but we will never know it\, we will never see it work. Unless we come together to make it work.” \n”Along with the exhibitions\, throughout the five-day event\, Special Conversations among artists\, curators\, scholars\, and collectors have been conceived to address issues in politics and aesthetics and their resonance in the contemporary era. \n“The Art of Transformation” will not stop there. Throughout the five-day Event\, the Opa-Locka community\, visitors\, and guests will be treated to re-imagined\, re-purposed\, and transformed spaces\, pop up street parties\, and concerts.
