As radio proliferated through the first half of the twentieth century\, Miami Beach also transformed from an untamed barrier island into a famous tourism and cultural destination. \nRadio quickly became the “rage” in the mid-1920s as more and more Americans realized that owning a radio meant news\, entertainment\, weather\, and politics could be transmitted wirelessly to them from the comfort of their homes. The radio brought families together to listen to broadcasts in their living rooms\, connecting people to faraway places and signaling the start of the machine age. \nMiami Beach’s own pioneers recognized that promotion was vital to its success. They broke the mold by adding radio stations to their hotels\, broadcasting a message from this city carved from a jungle. \nRadio styles were dynamic\, often reflecting American culture and industrial design. Movies\, architecture\, automobiles\, and the 1939 World’s Fair were a few such examples. The materials from which radio chassis were made such as wood\, resins\, plastics\, metals\, and mirrored glass\, provided an endless array of aesthetically pleasing choices – many which are highlighted in this exhibit. \nRadio Waves explores the Golden Age of Radio beginning in the 1920s to the late 1950s\, as manifested by the distinctive architecture of Miami Beach. Art Deco\, Streamline\, and Mid-Century Modern hotels and apartments houses designed by some of America’s foremost architects continue to welcome guests to the sun\, sand\, and sea of the City of Miami Beach. \nMiami-Dade Residents: Free Admission; General Ticket: $7 URL:https://mdpl.org/event/radio-waves-miami-beach-and-the-golden-age-of-radio/2022-12-26/ LOCATION:Art Deco Museum\, 1001 Ocean Drive\, Miami Beach\, FL\, 33139\, United States CATEGORIES:Museum Exhibition ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://mdpl.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/radio-waves-exhibit-1.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20221226T110000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20221226T180000 DTSTAMP:20240328T072234 CREATED:20221028T181447Z LAST-MODIFIED:20230316T143615Z UID:10004592-1672052400-1672077600@mdpl.org SUMMARY:Christo Drawings: A Gift from the Maria Bechily and Scott Hodes Collection DESCRIPTION:August 19\, 2022 – June 11\, 2023 \nChristo (born Christo Vladmirov Javacheff) and his wife and artistic collaborator Jeanne-Claude made an inestimable impact on the history of art since the mid-20th century. Together\, they created large-scale\, ephemeral\, public art projects\, involving dramatic interventions in carefully selected outdoor locations. With a career that spans nearly six decades\, their work has helped to expand the definition of art beyond paintings and sculptures\, envisioning instead a radically democratic art form capable of speaking directly to broad audiences across a full spectrum of society in public space. \nThis exhibition presents stellar works gifted to PAMM by Christo’s longtime friends Maria Bechily and Scott Hodes. These are fine examples of Christo’s drawing practice\, which constitutes a pivotal aspect of his production. Christo and Jeanne-Claude declined all financial support from governments\, institutions\, single patrons\, and foundations\, choosing to fund their massive projects through the direct sales of drawings such as these. These works memorialize the projects and represent an alternative to the traditional funding structures for art. Collectively\, the drawings exemplify an expansive overview of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s oeuvre\, comprising their major projects spanning from the late 1960s to the early 2000s. Mirrors of our loftiest dreams and deepest fears\, maps draw literal lines between “you” and “me\,” “us” and “other\,” more often reflecting how we see it than how it is. Plotting Power: Maps and the Modern Age follows the use of map-like imagery for political\, commercial\, and other purposes in the first half of the 20th century\, when the possibilities of travel and technology opened new horizons for global ambition. Featuring Wolfsonian collection items including paintings\, prints\, posters\, industrial design\, and graphic materials\, the exhibition traces how maps and other representations of geography were shaped by design strategies\, diverse agendas\, and signature stories of modern history. \nPlotting Power is made possible by the Arthur F. & Alice E. Featuring works from The Bass Collection and works on loan\, Phraseology is on view from July 30\, 2022\, through April 23\, 2023. \nThe term “phraseology” references the specific choice of words that a communicator\, in this case the artist\, uses to highlight certain topics. With the rise of the Conceptual Art movement in the 1960s\, many artists began to create art that valued an idea or concept over the finished work. Artists wanted to redefine what art could be and the topics it addressed beyond visual aesthetics. In Phraseology artists merge form and idea by creating works that contain text\, familiar phrases and poetry. \nArtists in Phraseology employ recognizable language\, phrases or slogans that provide conflicting modes of observation to relay a new or different perspective. Placing text in the central role in their art practice\, the artists use word play\, political activism\, subversion of advertising or appropriation of form to reveal\, amplify and question histories and contemporary issues. Ethnomusicologist Robin Moore answers that question by addressing both musical lineages and political changes. In the 1950s\, mambo\, cha-cha-cha\, and the conjunto sound of Arsenio Rodríguez put Cuban music and musicians at the center of New York City nightlife\, sparking a flow of influences between the two countries that continued far beyond the 1962 U.S. embargo on Cuba. In this talk inspired by our exhibition Turn the Beat Around\, Moore details how Puerto Rican\, Cuban\, and Dominican musicians in New York created salsa out of these rhythms while taking the music in new directions stylistically\, lyrically\, and politically. \nFree | Register \n  URL:https://mdpl.org/event/the-birth-of-salsa-in-new-york-city/ LOCATION:Wolfsonian-FIU\, 1001 Washington Avenue\, Miami Beach\, FL\, 33139\, United States CATEGORIES:Public Lecture ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/png:https://mdpl.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Screenshot-2023-01-06-114753.png ORGANIZER;CN="Wolfsonian-FIU":MAILTO:info@thewolf.fiu.edu END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20230121T190000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20230121T220000 DTSTAMP:20240328T072234 CREATED:20230120T191828Z LAST-MODIFIED:20230120T191828Z UID:10005411-1674327600-1674338400@mdpl.org SUMMARY:Tchaikovsky 5 DESCRIPTION:Orchestra Concert\n\n\nNew World Center\, Michael Tilson Thomas Performance Hall  \n\n\n\nSaturday\, January 21\, 2023 at 7:30 PM\nSunday\, January 22\, 2023 at 2:00 PM \n\nGemma New\, conductor\nAlisa Weilerstein\, cello\nChad Goodman\, conductor\n\nProgram\n\nColeman : Umoja\nBarber : Cello Concerto\nTchaikovsky : Symphony No. 5 \n\nBuy Tickets URL:https://mdpl.org/event/tchaikovsky-5/2023-01-21/ LOCATION:New World Symphony\, 500 17th Street\, Miami Beach\, FL\, 33139\, United States CATEGORIES:Live Music ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://mdpl.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/tchaika5web.jpeg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20230122T120000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20230122T150000 DTSTAMP:20240328T072234 CREATED:20230120T170922Z LAST-MODIFIED:20230120T170922Z UID:10005417-1674388800-1674399600@mdpl.org SUMMARY:Winter Kite Festival DESCRIPTION: URL:https://mdpl.org/event/winter-kite-festival/ LOCATION:12th Street and Ocean Dr\, 12th St and Ocean Dr\, Miami Beach\, FL\, 33139\, United States CATEGORIES:Family Day ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://mdpl.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/324092228_898641264609921_2592449606892231452_n-1.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20230124T173000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20230124T190000 DTSTAMP:20240328T072234 CREATED:20230120T190227Z LAST-MODIFIED:20230120T190249Z UID:10005415-1674581400-1674586800@mdpl.org SUMMARY:Miami Beach Orchid Society Meeting DESCRIPTION:Miami Beach Orchid Society Meeting\nTuesday 5:30pm-7pm \nIf you love orchids\, join our group!
