The Future of Hialeah Park Racetrack?
The Park was once the most beautiful race track in the world, it marks the beginnings of the city of Hialeah and its founders, features a unique central park area, and is a symbolic resting place for the horses that raced there and the millions of people who once cheered from the clubhouse and grandstand. Hialeah Park is the city's most evident and only historical link with the rest of the nation. It deserves nothing less than to be completely restored and preserved. See their website.
The Belgian Pavilion of the 1939 World's Fair
The Belgian Pavilion was designed by Henry Van de Velde, who had been commissioned to design the building in New York after his Belgian Pavilion was seen at the French International Exhibit in Paris in 1937, the last such fair in Europe before World War II. Originally planned to be re-built in Europe after the fair, this early modernist structure could not be returned to Nazi-occupied Belgium, and was given instead to Virginia Union University as a gift from the government of Belgium. Current efforts to replace the tower's carillon bells are underway.
